Gwendoline don't like to be pigeonholed. But we do: Nu Wave with wit, Synthwave with edge, Postpunk with Pop. As if Benjamin Biolay were presiding over Molchat Doma, "I'm Not In Love" (Chrystal Castles) met "Anyway" (OTO), Ladytron went on holiday with DAF. Since 2017, the social media-shy duo Micka (a.k.a. Mikoune) and Pierre (a.k.a. Daniel) have been pursuing their cold wave vision in secret. The debut was recorded in the purest DIY manner at home in the basement and produced in no time at all. For a long time there was hardly anything to google about Gwendoline, but of course those in the know didn't miss it. The Spanish label Dead Wax Records thought it was so great, released it digitally and on very limited vinyl, a reissue was released on the band's own label 2022. Now they have landed on Born Bad and are in the best of company with Vox Low, Frustration and Bracco. What makes Gwendoline unique? Certainly their anger paired with restraint, which they mix with self-criticism, irony and humour and which is reflected in the lyrics as well as Gwendolines sound.
