TOITEM was one of the most important phenomenas in Uruguays' musical history. Formed in 1970 by international acclaimed RUBEN RADO, the name TOTEM does not only stand for a solid pillar of rock in thr Rio De La Plata, but for the rise of the Candombe. Only existing in Uruguay, the Candombe is based on the sound of three drums, resulting in an unbelievable and never before heard polyrythm and a fascinating groove. The fate of Candombe is tightly fixed to the survival of the black community in Uruguay and of their culture. In countries like Argentinia both, black people and Candombe have disappeared.
