Toronto's soul artist Tanika Charles is set to release her third studio album, "Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly," on April 8th through Milan-based Record Kicks. This album, composed during the COVID-19 lockdowns, explores themes of growth and maturity, inspired by the symbolism of the night butterfly, or "papillon de nuit." Tanika discovered the beauty of this often-overlooked creature while in Paris, which resonated with her personal journey and collective experiences during the pandemic.The album features collaborations with both new and established producers, including Scott McCannell, Ben MacDonald, Chino de Villa, and newcomer Todd "HiFiLo" Pentney. Renowned contributors like Kevin Henkel and Jesse Bear also joined the project. Following her previous successful albums, "Soul Run" and "The Gumption," Tanika found solace in creating music amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, allowing her to channel her feelings into her work.Tanika co-wrote most of the album, working closely with regular collaborator Robert Bolton and emerging artist Tafari Anthony. The album features guest appearances from multidisciplinary artist Khari McClelland and Toronto rapper DijahSB. Tanika views this project as her best work, marking a pivotal moment in her acceptance of her artistic voice, despite her ongoing struggles with self-doubt.
